Discover the rich heritage of our hotel, nesseled in the heart of vibrant Victoria
Our History
Located on historic grounds, our hotel began as a Hudson’s Bay Company trading post in 1843, evolving as Victoria transformed from a trading outpost to the bustling capital of British Columbia. The site, once home to Grimm’s Carriage Factory in the 1880s, reflects the rugged charm of early Victoria, now hosting our esteemed hotel.
The original wooden structure was replaced with elegant tan brick and white terracotta during a pre-World War I building boom, marking our commitment to growth and refinement. Named initially as the Carlton Hotel and later the Saint James Hotel, our building has withstood time and turmoil, including a significant fire in the 1970s. Today, as the Best Western Plus Carlton Plaza, we proudly offer a blend of historic architecture and contemporary comfort, inviting guests to partake in our rich heritage.
